Rattlers and Acquired Brain Injury partnership mutually beneficial
A brain injury can dramatically alter someone’s life in an instant. Deng Leek, a former Sudan refugee, civil engineer, and competitive basketball player continues to “bounce back” from his stroke 18 months ago. After spending months in hospital, then personal care home, Deng has progressed to living independently.
While most medical professionals thought he would require living in a supportive environment permanently, with the ABI Outreach team support, Deng has defied the odds and continues to persevere. “ABI Outreach helped me access physiotherapy, housing, transportation, alcohol education and nutrition support. I was lost and in a dark place after my stroke, and now I’m hopeful and mostly independent again,” said Deng.
Recently, two members of the Rattlers, Anthony Tsegakele and D’Andre Bernard met with Deng and his SHA ABI case manager, Scott Heil, to shoot some hoops and congratulate Deng on his continued brain injury recovery. Deng, who stands 6’5” tall, thought he held his own despite some lingering left-sided weakness from his stroke.
A huge thank you to the Saskatchewan Rattlers’ basketball team, who generously provided the SHA’s Acquired Brain Injury team with the ability to send some of their patients to games. While the Rattlers are all business on the basketball floor, the organization takes pride in giving back to the community
